Spain's solar PV tops power mix for fifth consecutive month, generating 7,445 GWh in August

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Monthly statistics from Red Eléctrica de España (REE) show that in August 2026, Spain's electricity demand, adjusted for temperature and labor effects, increased by 2.4% year-on-year. Unadjusted demand for the month stood at 23,137 GWh, up 3.7% from August 2025.

From January to August, Spain's cumulative electricity consumption reached 175,858 GWh, up 2.8% compared to the same period last year; after excluding temperature and labor effects, the increase was 1.7%.

Renewable energy generation in August totaled 13,640 GWh, up 11% year-on-year, accounting for 53.6% of the month's generation mix.

Solar PV remained Spain's largest power source for the fifth consecutive month, generating 7,445 GWh in August, up 27.5% year-on-year and representing 29.2% of the generation mix. On August 5, solar PV also set a new daily generation record, reaching 281.2 GWh.

In the month's generation mix, combined cycle gas turbines ranked as the second-largest power source with a 20.7% share, followed by nuclear power at 18.6%; wind power accounted for 13.3% and hydropower for 6.9%.

The above generation mix does not include self-consumption generation. Current estimates indicate that self-consumption facilities in Spain generated approximately 1,600 GWh in August; if the corresponding self-consumption estimates were included in the statistics, the share of renewables in the month's generation mix would rise to 55.1%.

In August, a total of 954 GWh of electricity was integrated into the grid in Spain through battery energy storage systems and pumped-storage hydropower plants.

During the month, the submarine interconnection between mainland Spain and Mallorca met 23.5% of the Balearic Islands' electricity demand.
