China and Mongolia Achieve "Grid-to-Grid" Cross-Border Interconnection: Inner Mongolia's Power Supply Project to Southern Mongolia Fully Commissioned
en.Wedoany.com Reported - At 0:32 on September 16, as Mongolia's 220 kV Tavantolgoi Substation was connected to the Inner Mongolia power grid, Inner Mongolia Power Group's power supply project to southern Mongolia was officially commissioned and began delivering electricity, marking a historic leap for the power grids of China and Mongolia from "grid-to-point" dedicated-line supplementation to "grid-to-grid" cross-border interconnection.

The power supply project to southern Mongolia transmits electricity from the Inner Mongolia power grid via the 220 kV Guo'ao double-circuit cross-border transmission line, which starts in Urad Middle Banner, Bayannur City, Inner Mongolia, to Umnugovi Province in Mongolia, achieving "grid-to-grid" interconnection between the two countries' power grids. The project is a landmark undertaking in China-Mongolia energy cooperation. Since Mongolia officially proposed the cooperation intention to increase power supply to southern Mongolia in February 2023, the two sides quickly established a cross-border collaborative cooperation mechanism. After tackling challenges through multiple stages, the project achieved first-stage power transmission in July 2026, completed the successful energization of two substations in early September, and fully completed grid interconnection and commissioning on September 16.

Wang Zongze, a technical staff member of the Production Technology Department of Inner Mongolia Power Group, introduced that during the project construction period, both sides efficiently advanced various key tasks, completing a total of 57 key tasks across three major stages, successfully overcoming core technical challenges in cross-border grid interconnection, and promoting the mutual recognition of 8 technical standards and 15 operational processes between China and Mongolia.Inner Mongolia Power Group dispatched 5 batches of professional technical teams to Mongolia to comprehensively ensure the smooth implementation and safe commissioning of the project.

Leveraging Inner Mongolia's unique geographical advantage of connecting eight provinces domestically and bordering Russia and Mongolia externally, Inner Mongolia Power Group has continuously improved its cross-border transmission grid. It has now built 9 cross-border transmission lines ranging from 10 kV to 220 kV and covering 5 ports, forming a multi-level cross-border power supply network. After the project is commissioned, large industrial and mining projects in Mongolia as well as local urban and rural residential electricity consumption will receive stable power supply guarantees. In addition, supported by the cross-border green electricity cooperation mechanism, the proportion of green electricity transmitted from the Inner Mongolia power grid to Mongolia will exceed 40%.
