ABB Participates in the Development of the 800V DC Power System for Ferrari Hypersail
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 14, ABB announced a technical cooperation with the Ferrari Hypersail project, joining as an electrification partner in the development of its onboard DC power system. Hypersail is a 100-foot fully foiling single-hull ocean-going sailing yacht designed to operate entirely on onboard renewable energy. ABB will provide technical support in marine power, DC technology, power system integration, energy management, and intelligent power distribution, with a focus on participating in the development of the onboard 800V DC power system.

Hypersail adopts a two-level DC architecture of 48V and 800V. Electricity generated by onboard renewable energy sources will be generated, stored, distributed, and managed within the DC system to supply critical loads such as navigation, foil control, safety systems, and propulsion. ABB disclosed that this architecture will operate as a self-contained microgrid and will need to maintain energy supply and system control under offshore conditions including low temperatures, salt fog, high voltage, and continuous motion.
ABB's scope of work in the project includes DC system integration, intelligent energy management, power distribution, and technical support for the vessel's electrical systems. The company will leverage its more than 25 years of experience in DC technology development to participate in the design and validation of the 800V system. ABB currently holds approximately 700 related patents in the field of DC technology. Data obtained from project operation and testing will also be used for the subsequent development of power systems for marine power, renewable energy infrastructure, data centers, and industrial microgrids.
Ferrari previously disclosed that Hypersail is currently under construction in Italy, with participation in the design by French naval architect Guillaume Verdier. The hull adopts a fully foiling configuration, in which one foil is supported by a canting keel, while the other support points are located at the rudder and the foils on both sides. Ferrari positions it as a fully energy-self-sufficient 100-foot ocean-going sailing yacht. The project is planned to be launched in 2026, followed by the first round of sea trials.
The cooperation is currently still in the vessel construction and power system development stage. ABB and Ferrari have not yet disclosed the cooperation amount, the capacity of the energy storage system, the specific installed scale of onboard renewable energy, or the rated power of the 800V system. The next clearly defined milestone is to complete vessel construction and launch it in 2026, followed by sea trials to validate the performance of the DC power supply, energy management, and critical onboard systems under actual ocean-going conditions.
