Wedoany.com Report-Jun. 30, On June 24, 2025, China National Nuclear Corporation successfully hoisted the reactor internals into position at unit 4 of the Haiyang nuclear power plant in Shandong province, China. The reactor internals, weighing approximately 260 tonnes, are critical components within the reactor pressure vessel, designed to support the core, maintain fuel alignment, direct coolant flow, provide radiation shielding, and guide in-core instrumentation. The hoisting process, completed in 2 hours and 31 minutes, took place inside the unit’s reactor building.

The Haiyang nuclear power plant is expanding with the construction of two CAP1000 reactors, units 3 and 4, which are Chinese-adapted versions of the Westinghouse AP1000 design. The State Council approved the project on April 20, 2022. Construction of unit 3 began with the pouring of safety-related concrete for its nuclear island in July 2022, followed by the installation of its 281-tonne reactor pressure vessel in December 2023. Construction of unit 4 started in April 2023, with its reactor pressure vessel hoisted into place by a 3,200-tonne crawler crane in November 2024. Both units are expected to be fully operational by 2027.

The successful installation of the reactor internals at unit 4 marks a significant milestone in the project’s progress. The internals ensure the reactor operates safely and efficiently, supporting the plant’s role in providing clean energy. The Haiyang facility’s expansion aligns with efforts to enhance energy production capacity while prioritizing safety and sustainability.

China National Nuclear Corporation stated: “The reactor internals for Haiyang 4 - with a total hoisting weight of about 260 tonnes - were hoisted into the unit's reactor building on 24 June in a process lasting 2 hours and 31 minutes.” This achievement reflects the precision and expertise involved in the construction process, ensuring the project remains on track for its 2027 operational target.

The development of Haiyang units 3 and 4 underscores the region’s commitment to advancing nuclear energy infrastructure. By incorporating advanced reactor designs, the project aims to meet growing energy demands while contributing to sustainable development goals. The ongoing construction efforts at the Haiyang plant are expected to bolster Shandong province’s energy sector, providing reliable and low-emission power for years to come.
