UK's Balgray Station Invests £18.3 Million, Opens September 2026

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 27, the new Balgray railway station in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire, Scotland, officially entered service, with ScotRail trains beginning to call at the station that day. The project represents a total investment of £18.3 million, led by Network Rail, and is the first new railway station in East Renfrewshire in nearly 100 years. The station is located on the Neilston branch of the Cathcart Circle Lines, providing direct rail connections to Glasgow city centre.

Project funding comes from the Glasgow City Region City Deal, with the UK Government and the Scottish Government each contributing £7.87 million, and East Renfrewshire Council contributing £2.57 million. The project was delivered by Network Rail in partnership with East Renfrewshire Council, Transport Scotland, ScotRail and Story Contracting, and opened several weeks ahead of schedule while remaining within the established budget.

Balgray Station features two new platforms and accessible facilities, including an Access for All pedestrian footbridge with lifts, waiting facilities, WiFi, ticket machines, secure cycle storage, and 80 parking spaces, with the car park also equipped with electric vehicle charging facilities. A new pedestrian path connects the station to surrounding residential areas, Dams to Darnley Country Park and Balgray Reservoir. ScotRail currently operates a half-hourly service to Glasgow Central.

The station's footbridge lighting system was implemented by i-vision Lighting Solutions through Kelly Rail UK as contractor, using the Elektra 1712 G2 linear LED system, with a total of 37 luminaires installed, along with aluminium mounting structures, an IP67 connection system, and two sets of IP66 stainless steel power and control cabinets supplying 48V lighting circuits. The system completed mechanical installation, low-voltage connections, commissioning and final illuminance testing in spring of this year, approximately 6 months ahead of the station's official opening.

The Balgray Station project was originally planned to open in November 2026, and in July of this year Network Rail brought the opening forward to September 27. Following this official opening, the project has transitioned from the construction phase to the passenger operations phase.
