700-Meter Landslide Protection Maintenance Project Launched on Scotland's A83
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 5, Transport Scotland commissioned BEAR Scotland to carry out landslide protection and slope maintenance works on the Rest and Be Thankful section of the A83 in Scotland, with operations spread across 5 areas, a total length of approximately 700 meters, and a construction area of approximately 0.7 hectares. The project is planned for implementation in the 2026/27 financial year, with on-site construction scheduled for a maximum of approximately 6 weeks.

This round of works will repair the existing landslide debris protection facilities, including replacing or repairing damaged protection nets, braking components, and steel cables, as well as backfilling behind the foundation blocks. The works also include clearing silt and debris accumulated in watercourses and addressing identified slope instability areas.
New concrete diversion retaining walls will be built in Phase 1 and Phase 7 watercourses, and loose material will also be removed from some slope locations. The main construction equipment includes excavators, drilling rigs, dump trucks, crushing equipment, and hand tools, and the engineering plan also retains arrangements for using helicopters to lift equipment or materials when necessary.
The 5 construction areas are located along the A83 near the Rest and Be Thankful viewpoint, involving Phase 12, Phase 2b, Phase 7 and Phase 3, Phase 4b, and Phase 14 and the area to its north, respectively. During construction, single-lane closures and two-way temporary traffic signal control will be used, the speed limit will be reduced to 30 mph, and access to junctions and private roads along the route will be maintained.
BEAR Scotland has previously continuously carried out drainage improvements, verge reinforcement, lower slope stabilization, debris protection fence repairs, and local landslide repairs on this section. The follow-up work list announced in March 2026 also includes continued repair of debris protection facilities, Phase 3a lower slope and culvert works, westbound drainage improvements, and further protection fence construction.
Transport Scotland is currently also advancing the long-term improvement scheme for the A83 Rest and Be Thankful, and the project status for this section remains under construction. Lower slope stabilization and protection fencing works are also scheduled from October to December 2026, with the related temporary traffic management plan continuing until December 23, and subsequent maintenance works will continue to be implemented in 2027.
