en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 18, the main structures of the second-generation high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape production and headquarters base project of Shanghai Superconductor Technology Co., Ltd. in Pudong, Shanghai, China, were fully topped out. With a total investment of RMB 2.5 billion, the Phase III base is planned to produce 15,000 km per year of 12-mm-wide HTS tape. Once fully operational, the company's total capacity is expected to rise to 20,000 km per year. The base will now move into the production line assembly and equipment commissioning phase.

The project is located in the East Zone of Kangqiao Industrial Park, Shanghai, covering an area of 92.62 mu. Construction began on June 29, 2025, and the project was included in Shanghai's 2025 major construction project plan. The base includes two production plants, a dormitory building, a production support building, and ancillary facilities such as a Class B warehouse and a switching station. It will undertake the production of second-generation HTS tape, product R&D, and production line R&D.

Shanghai Superconductor currently has an annual capacity of 4,000 km of 12-mm-wide tape, with actual annual shipments exceeding 1,000 km. According to the company's published expansion plan, once the new base reaches full production, the company's planned second-generation HTS tape capacity will rank first among comparable companies globally.

The Phase III base is planned to be equipped with large-length HTS tape production lines capable of producing single lengths of 3 km. Shanghai Superconductor calls this the world's first production line of its kind and plans to roll out products in the first quarter of 2027. According to the technical plan published by the company, 3-km-long tape can reduce the number of joints in the winding of large superconducting magnets and the long-distance laying of superconducting cables, improving the reliability of related systems.

Shanghai Superconductor has supplied second-generation HTS tape to multiple controlled nuclear fusion magnet, HTS high-field magnet, and superconducting cable projects both in China and abroad. The company completed its Phase II expansion at the end of 2025 and is advancing Phase III base construction in 2026. Its existing production lines and the new base will jointly undertake the task of large-scale supply of superconducting tape.
