Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 7, Acwa Power, a Saudi-based energy company, has secured contracts for the Noor Midelt II and Noor Midelt III solar projects in Morocco, awarded through an international tender by the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN). Located near Midelt in the Atlas Mountains, each project features a 400 MW solar capacity and 602 MWh of battery energy storage.
Acwa Power will oversee the design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of both projects. Developed under a build-own-operate model, each is supported by a 30-year power purchase agreement with MASEN as the offtaker. These initiatives strengthen Morocco’s renewable energy infrastructure, aligning with its sustainability goals.
Marco Arcelli, CEO of Acwa Power, stated: “The company has now signed $3.5 billion worth of investments in Africa this year.” This highlights Acwa Power’s expanding role in advancing clean energy solutions across the continent.
The Noor Midelt II and III projects are part of the broader Noor Midelt initiative, which includes an 800 MW complex combining solar and concentrated solar power, awarded in 2019 to a consortium of EDF, Masdar, and Green of Africa. The new projects build on this foundation, enhancing Morocco’s renewable energy capacity.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Morocco’s solar capacity reached 934 MW by the end of 2024. A SolarPower Europe report indicates the country is on track to achieve 3 GW of solar capacity by 2028, driven by projects like Noor Midelt II and III.
The integration of battery storage in these projects ensures reliable energy supply, addressing variability in solar generation and supporting grid stability. By leveraging advanced technology and long-term agreements, the projects contribute to Morocco’s ambition to expand clean energy access and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Situated in the Atlas Mountains, the Midelt location offers favorable conditions for solar energy production. Acwa Power’s expertise in project development and operation positions it to deliver efficient and sustainable outcomes, supporting Morocco’s energy transition and economic growth.
These initiatives reflect Morocco’s commitment to renewable energy and its growing role as a leader in sustainable development in the region. The collaboration between Acwa Power and MASEN underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in achieving ambitious clean energy targets.
