Wedoany.com Report-Aug. 9, Provectus Biofuels Inc. signed a letter of intent with the Town of Vegreville, Alberta, to develop a biofuel facility that will transform wheat straw into renewable jet fuel (RJF). The initiative aims to utilize the region’s abundant agricultural byproduct to create sustainable aviation fuel, supporting both economic and environmental goals.

The facility will convert wheat straw into low-carbon jet fuel, offering multiple benefits. It provides farmers with a new income source by turning an underutilized byproduct into a valuable commodity for the aviation industry. The process reduces emissions compared to traditional practices like burning or plowing under excess straw. Additionally, the production of biochar will enhance crop yields and water retention, contributing to sustainable farming practices.

Jon Jaque, CEO of Provectus, stated: “We are excited to partner with the Town of Vegreville to advance a sustainable solution that benefits farmers, strengthens local economies, and supports a greener future for air travel. This initiative not only aligns with provincial and federal climate and energy objectives, it also fills a growing and unmet need among North American airlines that are actively pursuing initiatives to decarbonize.”

The Town of Vegreville has earned a Biofuel Development Opportunity Zone designation, recognizing its potential for bio-based industries due to the availability of excess wheat straw. While some straw is necessary for soil health, surplus amounts are often mulched or plowed back, releasing avoidable emissions. The proposed facility will create biochar, a soil amendment that improves agricultural productivity and supports a circular economy.

Tim MacPhee, Mayor of Vegreville, said: “Provectus’ establishment of the DobroJet Biofuels facility would be a significant milestone not just for the Vegreville region but for Canada as a whole. This project presents a unique opportunity to support regional farmers by creating a new revenue stream through the sale of wheat straw while also driving economic development through investment attraction and job creation.”

The facility will use proven technology to efficiently convert agricultural residues into renewable jet fuel, aligning with airline sustainability goals and Canada’s clean energy leadership. By leveraging local resources, the partnership between Provectus and Vegreville fosters economic growth, supports farmers, and advances low-carbon aviation solutions, contributing to broader environmental objectives.
