Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 29, Australian iron-ore company Fortescue has signed a landmark agreement with XCMG Machinery, marking China’s largest-ever export order for green mining equipment. The deal, formalized in Beijing by XCMG Chairman Yang Dongsheng and Fortescue Executive Chairman Dr. Andrew Forrest, was announced in New York during the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025. It involves the supply of 150 to 200 battery-electric, 240-tonne haul trucks for Fortescue’s Pilbara operations in Western Australia.
The signing ceremony with XCMG chairperson Yang Dongsheng and Fortescue executive chairperson Dr Andrew Forrest took place in Beijing and was formally announced in New York during the United Nations General Assembly last week.
The trucks will constitute nearly half of Fortescue’s future fleet of 300 to 400 zero-emission haul trucks, supporting the company’s goal to eliminate fossil fuel use in its land-based operations by 2030. Deliveries are scheduled between 2028 and 2030, building on a November 2024 contract for ancillary electric mining equipment, which was XCMG’s largest green mining equipment order outside China at the time.
Fortescue is adopting a dual-supplier strategy to accelerate fleet decarbonization. XCMG will provide up to half of the planned zero-emission trucks, while Liebherr, with manufacturing facilities in the United States, will supply the remaining haul trucks and electric excavators under an amended partnership from September 2024. Fortescue Zero, the company’s green technology division, will focus on developing and integrating advanced power systems to optimize battery-electric truck performance in the Pilbara’s challenging conditions.
“Technology is driving Fortescue to a more profitable Real Zero future,” said Dr. Andrew Forrest. “We will prove that profits go up when emissions go down.” The agreement underscores Fortescue’s commitment to sustainable mining practices, replacing diesel-powered equipment with battery-electric alternatives to significantly reduce emissions.
XCMG, a leading global construction and mining equipment manufacturer, is advancing its green technology portfolio, with new energy products accounting for a significant portion of its revenue. The partnership with Fortescue strengthens XCMG’s role in supporting global decarbonization efforts, particularly in the mining sector. This collaboration enhances Fortescue’s supply chain for zero-emission equipment, ensuring operational efficiency while aligning with environmental goals.
The initiative positions Fortescue as a leader in sustainable mining, leveraging innovative technology to enhance profitability and environmental responsibility. By integrating battery-electric trucks into its Pilbara operations, Fortescue aims to set a benchmark for the global mining industry, demonstrating the viability of zero-emission heavy equipment in large-scale operations.
