Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 24, UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has granted planning permission for the 100MW Stonestreet Green solar project in England. The Development Consent Order for the project was approved on October 23, ahead of the anticipated decision deadline of November 11.

Situated near Aldington in Kent, close to Ashford, the project will consist of ground-mounted solar panels and a co-located 99.9MW battery energy storage system. The facility will connect to the national grid through the nearby Sellindge substation, ensuring efficient energy distribution.

Evolution Power submitted the Development Consent Order application in the summer of 2024. The UK Planning Inspectorate completed its review by May and recommended approval, facilitating the project’s authorization.

Conor McNally, director of Evolution Power, stated: “Evolution Power welcomes the decision by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero to grant a Development Consent Order for the Stonestreet Green solar project, following a recommendation to approve from the Planning Inspectorate. Stonestreet Green Solar will make a significant contribution towards the UK’s Clean Power 2030 targets, while also providing 99.9MW of co-located battery storage capacity. We look forward to progressing the project in due course.”

The Stonestreet Green solar project is set to support the UK’s goal of expanding clean energy capacity by 2030. The battery storage system will enhance energy reliability by storing and dispatching renewable power, contributing to grid stability. The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities and drive economic growth in the Kent region during construction and operation.

This approval underscores the UK’s commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure to meet sustainability objectives. By utilizing high-quality solar resources and modern storage technology, the project will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote a cleaner energy future. Evolution Power’s collaboration with local stakeholders and regulatory authorities ensures alignment with environmental and community priorities.

The early approval of the Development Consent Order reflects effective coordination among Evolution Power, the UK Planning Inspectorate, and government officials. As the project progresses, it is expected to deliver significant environmental and economic benefits, reinforcing the UK’s role in renewable energy development and serving as a model for future solar initiatives.
