Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 21, Poland achieved a record level of potato exports from January to August 2025, shipping 107.54 thousand tons to international markets, according to FreshPlaza reports.

Ukraine continued as the primary destination, receiving 57.11 thousand tons of Polish potatoes during this period. Other notable importers included Romania with 11.9 thousand tons, Moldova at 9.92 thousand tons, Belarus with 6.52 thousand tons, Germany receiving 5.63 thousand tons, Italy at 5.01 thousand tons, Slovakia with 2.78 thousand tons, Latvia importing 2.4 thousand tons, Spain at 1.25 thousand tons, and the United Kingdom with 820 tons.

Export earnings for these eight months totaled PLN 151.99 million, equivalent to about 30.4 million euros or UAH 1,467 million. This figure marks a substantial increase from the previous year's PLN 110.04 million, or approximately 22.0 million euros and UAH 1,072 million. The Ukrainian market contributed nearly half of the revenue, generating PLN 73.94 million, or roughly 14.8 million euros and UAH 850 million.

Despite the strong export performance, Poland's potato imports outpaced outbound shipments. Over the same timeframe, the country imported 171.69 thousand tons valued at around 55.2 million euros. Germany served as the leading supplier, providing various types including table, chilled, seed, and starch varieties.

The robust export activity occurred against a backdrop of ample domestic supply. Potato production in 2025 reached 6.8 million tons, surpassing internal consumption estimated at no more than 6 million tons. This surplus resulted from expanded cultivation areas and favorable yields, which exerted downward pressure on prices, particularly in the fresh market segment. In contrast, prices for contracted potatoes intended for processing showed greater stability.

By November, wholesale prices for medium- and high-quality potatoes in 15 kg bags stabilized after an extended period of decline, trading between PLN 0.40 and 0.53 per kg, or approximately 0.08 to 0.11 euros per kg and UAH 4.56 to 6.04 per kg. Industry observers anticipate a gradual price upturn toward the season's close, noting that even in challenging years, values typically rise in the final months as supplies tighten.

The combination of record exports and higher revenues underscores Poland's growing competitiveness in the global potato trade, supported by efficient logistics and diverse market access. At the same time, the import volume highlights ongoing reliance on foreign sources to meet specific quality and variety demands within the domestic processing and consumption sectors. Overall, the sector's dynamics reflect a balanced approach to managing surplus production through international sales while maintaining supply chain resilience for local needs.
