Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 26, Vodacom Group has expanded its partnership with Google Cloud to accelerate artificial intelligence adoption and data modernisation across its African operations, the companies announced this week.

Under the agreement, Vodacom will migrate its core data platforms to Google Cloud, including BigQuery, creating a unified, secure foundation for real-time analytics and enhanced governance. The telecom operator will also integrate Google Cloud's generative AI tools—such as Gemini, Veo, and Imagen—along with Vertex AI to improve network performance, strengthen fraud detection, and deliver personalised customer experiences.

"This collaboration is more than a technology upgrade – it is a deep commitment to Africa's digital revolution," said Shameel Joosub, CEO of Vodacom. "Integrating Google Cloud's data and AI solutions into our business will modernise our infrastructure and fundamentally shift our operational paradigm. This collaboration is essential for us to build and deploy solutions that address the unique challenges and opportunities of the continent, ensuring the transformative power of AI is accessible to millions of customers and businesses across Africa."

The initiative rests on three main pillars: comprehensive data unification, accelerated AI deployment, and development of Africa-specific products. Early priorities include advancing financial inclusion through new fintech services, creating tailored enterprise offerings, and enhancing content accessibility and educational tools for consumers.

"Google Cloud is proud to support Vodacom in accelerating AI across Africa," said Maureen Costello, vice president, UKI and SSA at Google Cloud. "By providing access to our most advanced generative AI models from Gemini and our leading data infrastructure, we are supporting Vodacom's ambitious vision to build technology solutions that improve the lives of Africans."

The expanded collaboration builds on an existing relationship between Google Cloud and Vodafone Group, Vodacom's parent company, which began in 2021 and was further strengthened last year with generative AI initiatives across Europe and Africa.

By combining Vodacom's extensive regional presence with Google Cloud's scalable infrastructure and advanced AI capabilities, the partnership aims to drive operational efficiency and introduce innovative services designed specifically for African markets and communities.
