Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 29, DP World Antwerp Gateway has completed a €230 million ($266 million) expansion project scheduled for full implementation in 2026, increasing the terminal's annual handling capacity by 30%. The upgrade solidifies the Port of Antwerp-Bruges' position as one of Europe's premier integrated logistics centres.

Opened in 2005, Antwerp Gateway has expanded from an initial 70,000 TEU throughput to over 2.4 million TEU in 2025. Recognised as a pioneer in terminal automation, the facility sets industry standards through advanced technology, seamless intermodal connections, and extensive use of renewable energy.

The investment covers new quay infrastructure, enlarged container yard areas, and enhanced digital platforms. Key features include the addition of the final four automated stacking crane modules in 2026, enabling higher-density storage, and the planned rollout of DP World's upgraded Zodiac terminal operating system in 2028 for improved operational planning and real-time visibility.

Rashid Abdulla, CEO and Managing Director of DP World Europe, stated: "For two decades, Antwerp Gateway has embodied our mission to make trade flow. This investment reinforces our long-term commitment to Europe, our customers and the communities we serve."

The terminal employs more than 750 people and operates a fully digital environment featuring a Truck Appointment System, dedicated Trucker App, and biometric access controls. Sustainability initiatives include on-site biogas and wind power generation that support daily operations.

Edi Cioran, CEO of DP World Antwerp Gateway, commented: "From maximising existing space through modern technology to promoting night logistics and intermodal transport, Antwerp Gateway continues to push boundaries. Our focus on safety, digital innovation, and renewable energy ensures the terminal remains a European leader for decades to come."

The expansion strengthens barge and rail connectivity, further reducing road transport dependency and supporting lower-carbon supply chains across the continent. Recent digital advancements at the broader Port of Antwerp-Bruges include the full launch of the Inbound Release Platform (IRP), developed jointly with NxtPort and The Way Forward, to streamline customs processes under the new European framework for incoming cargo.
