Wedoany.com Report-Dec.3, APM Terminals has confirmed a $550 million investment to expand the Multipurpose North Terminal at Callao Port in Peru. Work will begin in January 2026 and complete within two years, increasing annual handling capacity to 2.4 million TEUs through longer berths, additional cranes and upgraded yard facilities.

Fernando Fauche, Chief Commercial Officer of APM Terminals Peru, stated on 19 November 2025 that the project will significantly improve operational efficiency and service levels for shipping lines and cargo owners calling at South America’s busiest container gateway.

The expansion aligns with the recent introduction of direct container services from ports in China and South Korea to Callao. These routes reduce transit time from Asia to approximately 23 days, compared with longer journeys via intermediate transshipment hubs.

Early sailings on the new services have carried consumer goods, including merchandise from Chinese online retailers such as Temu. Bookings for the coming six weeks are already at full capacity, reflecting strong initial demand.

Port authorities and APM Terminals emphasize that Callao and the nearby Chancay terminal, which opened in November 2024, serve complementary roles in handling growing trade volumes along Peru's coast. Together, the facilities support increased container flows between Asia and Latin America.

The Callao upgrade forms part of broader efforts to strengthen regional logistics infrastructure. It follows the completion of a separate $95 million phase at the adjacent South Terminal and supports Peru's position as a key distribution point for imports destined for inland markets in South America.

In a related development, SAAM Towage, the leading tug operator across the Americas, reinforced its Peruvian fleet in October 2025 with the addition of the modern vessel Charrán. The new tug enhances manoeuvring assistance for larger containerships calling at Callao and other national ports.

These investments and service improvements collectively contribute to smoother cargo movement and greater reliability for international trade passing through Peru's principal maritime gateway. Shipping lines, exporters and importers are expected to benefit from reduced delays and expanded capacity as the enhanced facilities come online over the next two years.
