In the Catalan town of Creixell in northeastern Spain, there is a residential building designed by Alventosa Morell Arquitectes, featuring distinctive architectural ingenuity. This house was custom-built for a couple, cleverly integrating with its surroundings. Its color palette draws inspiration from a nearby pine forest, creating a harmonious and natural atmosphere.
The house adopts a compact design with a rational rectangular floor plan. The ground floor houses the kitchen and living/dining area, forming a long, narrow open-plan space that occupies half of the floor. Three large windows provide ample natural light and offer expansive views of the adjacent garden. The other half of the floor is allocated to the bedroom, bathroom, and entrance area. An elegant white steel staircase leads to the first-floor corridor, which connects to the living/dining area. An asymmetrical roof design makes one half of the house taller, creating a mezzanine level. The gallery within this mezzanine is utilized as a fitness area, among other uses, maximizing the space.
The interior of the house is enveloped in a concrete shell. However, unlike solid concrete walls, it employs a filled support structure covered with birch plywood, imparting a sense of warmth. The façade is adorned with uniquely shaped windows featuring pine frames and cork finishes. This not only enhances thermal insulation but also gives the house an appearance that lies somewhere between abstract sculpture and a cozy cottage, showcasing the unique charm of its architectural design.
