Wedoany.com Report on Jan 31st, U.S. oil and gas giant ExxonMobil recently deployed maritime safety technology from Sentinel Proactive to protect a subsea pipeline system located offshore Guyana. This pipeline system connects to ExxonMobil's first major offshore development project in the Stabroek block.
The pipeline serves the Liza field development project and will transport natural gas to onshore facilities in Guyana to meet domestic demand, including a 300-megawatt combined-cycle power plant. With increasing vessel traffic in Guyana's coastal waters, ExxonMobil integrated Sentinel Proactive's Virtual Aid to Navigation technology to mitigate risks associated with nearshore anchoring.
This technology is designed to accurately display the pipeline's location on a navigator's system. The platform combines continuous monitoring, automated detection, and direct alerts to the ship's bridge to help prevent incidents. Sentinel Proactive stated that Virtual Aids to Navigation enable navigators to identify restricted areas earlier and adjust their course before anchoring or operations that could endanger subsea assets occur.
The system establishes multi-layered protection zones along the pipeline corridor. When a vessel approaches these zones, the system automatically sends escalating safety messages via the Automatic Identification System. These notifications are issued when a vessel first enters the outer cautionary zone and continues as it moves towards the pipeline's core area, prompting the crew to avoid anchoring or take immediate corrective action.
Duncan Richards, Director at Sentinel Proactive, said, "Protecting what matters most requires both vigilance and innovation. Our deployment in Guyana enables crews to identify risks earlier, react faster, and operate with greater confidence—helping to safeguard critical offshore infrastructure and the environment." This technology deployment is part of ExxonMobil's efforts to enhance safety and environmental protection measures for its offshore operations.
ExxonMobil Guyana Limited is the operator of the Stabroek block, holding a 45% interest. Its partners include Hess Guyana Exploration Ltd. with a 30% stake, and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited with a 25% stake.
