Wedoany.com Report on Feb 10th, Recently, the Han Mountain Tunnel, part of the Shanwei-Meizhou Expressway expansion project under the Guangdong Transportation Group, was successfully holed through, marking the completion of all new tunnel breakthrough works along the entire project line. Located in Fengshun County, Meizhou City, this tunnel spans 345 meters and is a super-large-span, one-way four-lane tunnel. Since its commencement in August 2025, it has been successfully completed after overcoming complex geological conditions and construction challenges.

The Han Mountain Tunnel is situated in the Rongjiang Fault Zone, where the surrounding rock has poor stability. It required traversing shallow-buried sections and gullies, with a minimum burial depth of only 14 meters. Both ends of the tunnel are adjacent to existing expressways and railways, posing multiple pressures on construction, including safety, environmental protection, and protection of existing traffic. To address these complex conditions, the project team adopted bi-directional excavation from both the entrance and exit. They innovatively applied the "Steel Frame and Rock Wall Combined Support Method," which controls surrounding rock deformation by combining support with the rock wall. This approach has accumulated valuable experience for tunnel breakthrough construction under similar geological conditions.

Zhong Wenxin, Engineering Department Manager of the TJ3 Section of the Poly Changda Shanwei-Meizhou Expressway Expansion Project, stated: "We dynamically adjusted the construction methods based on the surrounding rock conditions, employing different excavation and support measures in different sections. At the tunnel entrance and exit, hydraulic rock drills were used for excavation. Inside the tunnel, depending on the varying surrounding rock, we employed excavation and support methods such as the double-side drift method, the steel frame and rock wall combined support method, and the bench cut method. This ensured both construction safety and progress control requirements."

During the preliminary construction phase, facing exploration difficulties caused by steep terrain, the project introduced large drones to hoist drilling rigs to the hillside and establish work platforms. This approach not only improved efficiency but also minimized the impact on the surrounding ecology. Sun Keqiang, Director of the Project Management Office, pointed out that the breakthrough of the Han Mountain Tunnel has created conditions for subsequent processes like lining and pavement construction. The team will continue to strictly control quality and safety, fully advancing the project construction.

Since January 2026, the project has completed the renovation of multiple toll stations and opened service areas. Subsequent efforts will focus on advancing critical control projects such as the Tanling Overpass Bridge and the Leigongdong Tunnel. The Shanwei-Meizhou Expressway expansion project spans approximately 88 kilometers and adopts a dual eight-lane standard. Upon completion, it will effectively enhance the traffic capacity and service level of the road network in northeastern Guangdong, holding positive significance for improving regional transportation infrastructure.
