The Canadian federal government and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador have announced a joint investment of over $139 million for the expansion of the Riverhead Wastewater Treatment Plant in St. John's. This water infrastructure project aims to enhance primary treatment capacity and lay the groundwork for the construction of future secondary treatment facilities and site preparation.

A news release from the Department of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities stated that the upgrade of the Riverhead facility is a critical step in improving St. John's water infrastructure. This investment will bring the local wastewater treatment system closer to meeting the national standards of the federal wastewater systems effluent regulations, which stipulate the treatment requirements wastewater must meet before discharge.

Federal Minister of Fisheries and Member of Parliament for St. John's East, Joanne Thompson, said, "Strengthening critical infrastructure, projects like this help unlock future housing opportunities for growing communities. This key investment in wastewater infrastructure in St. John's, Mount Pearl, and Paradise will protect local waterways and create a healthier environment."

St. John's Mayor Danny Breen added, "Through strong collaboration between all levels of government, we are moving forward with the largest infrastructure project in the city's history. Expanding the Riverhead Wastewater Treatment Plant is not only crucial to meeting modern environmental standards but also ensures we can support future growth and new housing developments."

Regarding the funding allocation, the federal government will invest $69,639,116 through the Interprovincial Infrastructure component of the New Building Canada Fund. Newfoundland and Labrador and local governments will each contribute $34,819,558. Of the municipal share, St. John's will cover approximately 81%, while Mount Pearl and Paradise will be responsible for 14% and 5%, respectively.

This water infrastructure upgrade plan is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of wastewater treatment in St. John's, providing solid support for local environmental protection and community development. Upon completion, the Riverhead Wastewater Treatment Plant will better serve regional needs and promote sustainable development.
