Wedoany.com Report on Mar 13th, Belgian shipowner Transpetrol has recently placed an order with South Korea's HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for two liquefied petroleum gas carriers. The contract is worth approximately 340.2 billion South Korean won, equivalent to $230.7 million. Announced by the parent company HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the buyer was initially described only as a European shipping company. Subsequently, industry sources confirmed that the Belgian shipowner Transpetrol is the party behind this transaction.
The two vessels are large gas carriers specifically designed to transport ammonia, a sector gaining increasing attention as ammonia is viewed as a potential marine fuel and hydrogen carrier. This order continues the long-standing cooperative relationship between Transpetrol and HD Hyundai's shipyard. As early as 2014, Transpetrol ordered very large gas carriers from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. As the company continues to renew and expand its fleet, it has consistently chosen shipbuilders associated with Hyundai for collaboration.
In addition to its gas transportation business, Transpetrol is also increasing its tanker tonnage. The shipowner has signed contracts with Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding for the construction of four 115,000-deadweight-ton LR2 product tankers. Some of these tankers have already been delivered, with the remainder scheduled for delivery within this year. Established over 30 years ago, Transpetrol currently controls approximately 15 vessels, including tankers ranging from 45,000 to 110,000 deadweight tons and two very large gas carriers.
