en.Wedoany.com Report on Mar 27th, UK open-access rail operator Lumo has released the first images of its refurbished Class 222 train fleet, which will be used for a new service on the West Coast Main Line launching this spring. The project, in collaboration with Alstom and Beacon Rail, includes a new maintenance depot in Preston and is expected to create around 100 local jobs. Tickets for the new route from London Euston to Stirling are now on sale, with fares starting from £29.90.

The project encompasses rolling stock renewal, infrastructure development, and operational expansion. The Class 222 trains are undergoing modernization at Alstom's Widnes facility, receiving a new exterior livery and interior refurbishment, with some seats being replaced and others reupholstered. The Preston maintenance depot will handle fleet upkeep, while the service will offer direct, low-cost travel from London to Scotland. The total number of refurbished trains has not been disclosed.

Lumo's strategy is based on utilizing existing infrastructure and refurbished rolling stock, contrasting with the UK government-led HS2 high-speed rail project. HS2 involves new line construction with an investment of £43.6 billion and its plans have been delayed until summer 2026. Lumo's privately funded model aims for rapid market entry, enhancing competitiveness and capacity through asset reuse, reflecting a trend in the rail industry to optimize existing networks.

Open-access operators like Lumo operate by purchasing track access slots, competing with franchised operators without government subsidies. The Class 222 trains are not new; they were previously used by East Midlands Railway and are now being refurbished for Lumo. The new service provides passengers with a low-cost alternative for London to Scotland travel on the West Coast Main Line, increasing travel options and promoting price competition.
