en.Wedoany.com Reported - Portishead and Pill in North Somerset, England, will be reconnected to the national rail network, with the UK government confirming an investment of £63 million. Passenger services from Portishead to Bristol Temple Meads are expected to launch in 2028, running hourly with stops at Pill, Parson Street, and Bedminster, with a total journey time of approximately 25 minutes.

This £63 million central government contribution is part of a £197 million funding package agreed between the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority and North Somerset Council. Information published by Network Rail in 2025 shows that the project requires upgrading 5.5 miles of existing freight railway, restoring 3 miles of disused track, and building two new stations at Portishead and Pill. Portishead is currently one of the largest towns in England without a railway station, and once services resume, it is estimated that over 50,000 people will be reconnected to the rail network, generating £43 million in annual economic growth. The Department for Transport has not disclosed the cost breakdown for each station, nor whether the initial scope includes electrification.

Great Western Railway (GWR) is developing this service, with its operations scheduled to transfer into public ownership in December 2025, ultimately becoming part of Great British Railways. The line will also connect to Bristol Brabazon and the new Aviva Arena in the future.

The £63 million investment is broadly comparable to the £60 million allocated by the Department for Transport for the refurbishment of East Midlands Railway's regional and Connect fleets, but is far lower than the £45 billion Northern Powerhouse Rail plan proposed for Yorkshire and the North of England. The East Midlands plan also includes a £400 million contract to procure 33 new Aurora bimodal trains, expected to be delivered by the end of 2025. Under the Department for Transport's 2025–2026 public ownership programme, the South Western and Essex Thameside contracts were transferred to state-owned operators in May and July 2025, respectively.

Forecasts published by Market Data Forecast in 2025 indicate that the UK rail market size will grow from $115.36 billion in 2025 to $185.31 billion by 2034, with the construction sector accounting for 54.3%. Network Rail has stated that the December 2025 timetable will deliver faster journey times and more seats, particularly benefiting the North East of England.
