en.Wedoany.com Reported - Tencent Cloud is expanding its telecommunications business in emerging markets, positioning artificial intelligence and super app platforms as core tools to help operators drive business growth and explore new revenue streams.

Fred Sun, General Manager of Tencent Cloud Europe, noted in an interview that telecom operators in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia are focusing on enhancing user engagement. He stated: "The common theme we hear is growth. Telecom companies have a massive user base, but the challenge lies in converting these users into more active digital customers and increasing monetization."
To address this, Tencent Cloud is promoting its "Super App as a Service" platform, enabling operators to integrate multiple services into a single application. This model has been deployed in partnership with operators including Orange, e&, and Telkomsel, particularly in emerging markets where app usage is relatively low.
Sun indicated that this presents significant growth potential. In some cases, operators with hundreds of millions of users have only a small fraction actively using their digital platforms. "If you improve usability and experience, you can dramatically increase engagement," he said.
Beyond super apps, Tencent Cloud is also advancing AI-led use cases, especially in digital onboarding and security. Eric Li, Chief AI Architect at Tencent Cloud, pointed out that as more services move online, demand for AI-driven eKYC and identity verification tools is growing.
However, the rise of AI-generated fraud poses new risks. "As technology evolves, so does fraud," Li said. "We are seeing increased use of AI-generated content and deepfakes, making detection crucial." Tencent is leveraging its experience in China's fintech sector to deploy fraud detection tools in overseas markets, while also providing operators with platforms to build AI agents without requiring extensive in-house expertise.
Cost remains a key concern for operators in low-ARPU markets, but Tencent Cloud believes adopting AI delivers clear returns. Sun noted that moving processes like SIM card registration online can reduce reliance on physical retail networks and lower operational costs. "It's about improving productivity and ensuring the business case works," he said.
The company is also targeting enterprise opportunities through its sovereign cloud services, allowing operators to host cloud infrastructure in their own data centers and sell services to business customers. Despite expanding its capabilities, Tencent Cloud emphasizes it does not intend to compete with telecom companies. "We see ourselves as partners," Sun said. "The goal is to help operators grow, improve efficiency, and deliver better user engagement."
