en.Wedoany.com Reported - South African energy and chemical group Sasol has officially entered the rapidly growing sustainable aviation fuel market after receiving the ISCC Plus sustainability certification. The certification was awarded by German testing body TÜV SÜD for fuel produced at its Natref refinery in South Africa.
With a daily processing capacity of 108,500 barrels, the Natref refinery is currently being converted into a hybrid biorefinery capable of processing both traditional and renewable feedstocks. Sasol stated that its sustainable aviation fuel is produced using recycled cooking oil and vegetable oils, which are considered practical options for low-carbon aviation fuel in the near term. The company has also secured certification for sustainable chemicals at its Secunda facility, helping to expand commercial opportunities for low-carbon products. This ISCC Plus certification paves the way for Sasol to export its products to the EU market.
"Used cooking oil collected in South Africa is often shipped via Durban to Rotterdam, where it is converted into aviation fuel," said Sarushen Pillay, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Technology at Sasol. He noted that refining these materials locally would retain more economic value, support employment, and build technical expertise. The EU is gradually increasing its blending mandates for sustainable aviation fuel, creating long-term market demand for compliant producers.
In terms of production volume, the Natref refinery targets 1 million to 2 million liters this year, with plans to increase to approximately 16 million liters by 2027 and 100 million liters by 2030. Combined with the capacity of the Secunda plant, Sasol expects total production of sustainable aviation fuel to reach 200 million liters. The company is also collaborating with Anglo American and De Beers to research biolipid feedstocks such as Solaris crops to diversify its raw material supply. Research by the World Wildlife Fund shows that South Africa has the potential to produce 3.2 billion to 4.5 billion liters of sustainable aviation fuel annually. This certification provides Sasol with market access to enter the sustainable aviation fuel sector.
