en.Wedoany.com Reported - A joint venture of two German contractors will deliver an infrastructure project on a canal in Bavaria, with a contract value of £330 million (approximately €380 million).

Strabag subsidiary Züblin, headquartered in Stuttgart, is partnering with Bauer Spezialtiefbau, based in Schrobenhausen, to carry out the replacement of the Erlangen Lock.

The project team said the lock, located on the Main-Danube Canal and commissioned in the 1970s, is no longer suitable for refurbishment. The new lock will be built 300 meters north of the existing one, using solid concrete construction methods. To extend its service life, the number of joints in the structure will be minimized. The lock chamber will be 190 meters long and 12.5 meters wide, wider than the original lock.

Other works include the construction of approach structures, an upstream head, discharge structures, lateral water-saving basins, and a bypass channel for water management. The Main-Danube Canal will remain fully operational throughout the construction period, which is expected to last until 2033. The existing facility will only be decommissioned after the new lock is completed.

The Züblin-Bauer joint venture is already undertaking the replacement of the Kriegenbrunn lock nearby. Jörg Rösler, a member of the Strabag Management Board, said: "Winning another major waterway project strengthens our strong position in this strategically important infrastructure sector. The replacement and new construction of the Erlangen Lock is not only a major project for the region but also a significant contribution to the sustainable modernization of European waterways."

The Main-Danube Canal, stretching 171 kilometers and completed in 1992, connects major rivers in northern and southern Germany, providing a vital freight waterway route between the North Sea and the Black Sea. Strabag and Züblin recently also secured a contract to participate in Germany's Pfaffensteig Tunnel project. This 11-kilometer twin-tube tunnel will establish a direct connection between the new long-distance railway station at Stuttgart Airport and the existing Gäubahn railway line, significantly reducing travel time between Stuttgart and the Swiss border.
