en.Wedoany.com Reported - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the launch of a Superfund Solutions Initiative aimed at accelerating the cleanup of contaminated sites nationwide. The initiative will cover more than 1,340 sites on the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL).
The EPA stated that this long-term action plan will provide human health and environmental protection for communities across the country by deploying gold-standard science, streamlining decision-making processes, cutting red tape, accelerating cleanup decisions, modernizing tools, and strengthening cooperative federalism.
The cleanup and revitalization of contaminated land can transform these sites into productive community spaces, such as parks, sports fields, wildlife refuges, or new residential and commercial areas. The EPA added that over the past 15 years, redeveloped sites have generated more than $868 billion in revenue for local economies and employed hundreds of thousands of Americans.
EPA Deputy Administrator Fotouhi stated that many communities have waited long enough for the EPA and responsible parties to begin work, and the new Superfund Solutions Initiative is an important step to get these critical cleanups back on track. He praised career employees for their hard work on the initiative and said that in the coming months, the EPA will take concrete steps to cut red tape, accelerate analysis and decision-making, identify common-sense solutions, and work with partners to meet community needs.
The EPA noted that process challenges and bureaucratic delays have hindered greater progress in cleaning up contaminated sites. The Washington, D.C.-based agency said that since January 2025, it has completed cleanup at more than 290 Superfund sites, removed over 59 million cubic yards of contaminated soil and water, and recovered more than $864 million from responsible parties.
"American communities deserve faster results, safe and healthy land, and strong local economies," said Thomas Croci, Acting Assistant Administrator for Land and Emergency Management.
The new initiative will build on existing progress by streamlining the agency's cleanup approach through enhanced project management, earlier deployment of tools and authorities, and the use of smarter science to achieve smarter outcomes. Some of the goals include: accelerating ongoing investigations at more than 500 Superfund sites to move more quickly from the assessment phase to the cleanup phase, reducing risks to human health and the environment; increasing targeted water, soil, and air sampling, and conducting more timely inspections of facilities and land, enabling site teams to enter communities earlier to ensure long-term human health protection and support reuse opportunities that can bring economic benefits to communities; accelerating the selection of the best cleanup methods by more quickly conducting remedial investigations, feasibility studies, and records of decision; modernizing site management practices to enable the EPA to make decisions faster and focus on sites requiring the most attention; while evaluating all options for a given site under the Superfund, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste cleanup program, and the Brownfields program; launching short-term projects to provide immediate on-site protection while a comprehensive site cleanup approach is finalized; expanding collaboration to provide more training and capacity-building tools to enhance states' ability to manage cleanups and reduce unnecessary federal involvement; and standardizing approaches so that federal, state, and local partners do not have to repeat efforts for every cleanup action.
The EPA stated that it will share site-specific cleanup progress and the agency's progress toward these goals. In addition to providing results through the Quarterly Superfund Accomplishments Report, the EPA will continue to update the public on progress on its website.
