en.Wedoany.com Reported - The UK's first heathland green bridge has opened to pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders in Surrey. Named Cockcrow Bridge, it spans the A3 road, connecting Ockham and Wisley Commons, providing a unique passage for lowland heathland, one of the rarest habitat types in the UK.

The bridge not only offers people a safe way to cross the busy carriageway but also provides a safe passage for wildlife such as deer, badgers, voles, and other small animals.

The bridge's beams were installed last year by National Highways, after which workers used specialist equipment to transport nearby turf onto the bridge.

Approximately 10,000 square metres of heathland turf were relocated from donor sites, and the landscape will gradually naturalise over the coming years.

Cockcrow Bridge is a cornerstone of National Highways' green legacy commitment, part of the M25 Junction 10 and A3 Wisley interchange upgrade project.

Jonathan Wade, Senior Project Manager at National Highways, said: "This scheme is not just about improving road travel—enhancing the surrounding environment is also a major focus of our work. We are delighted to have taken this significant step in making Cockcrow Bridge a reality, allowing a range of wildlife to more easily migrate, mate, forage, and survive."

Green bridges are hailed as a way to connect fragmented habitats and vulnerable populations, but so far only a handful have been built in the UK, compared to dozens in other continental European countries.
