en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Port of Rio de Janeiro has joined the ranks of Brazilian ports capable of accommodating Neo-Panamax vessels, among the largest ship types in global commercial shipping. This milestone was achieved following the completion of dredging and modernization works on the port's access channel, with a total investment of 163 million Brazilian reais.

The first vessel to dock under the new operating conditions was the container ship MSC Katrina, measuring 366 meters in length and 48.4 meters in width, with a capacity of 14,131 TEUs.

Upon completion of the works, the minimum depth of the access channel was increased from 15 meters to 16.2 meters, enabling an operational draft of 15.3 meters, while also improving infrastructure to accommodate Neo-Panamax vessels.

"The arrival of large vessels marks a new development phase for the Port of Rio de Janeiro. This progress enhances the terminal's competitiveness, consolidates its position in international shipping routes, and underscores the importance of investing in the modernization of Brazilian port infrastructure," said Alex Ávila, head of Brazil's National Port Authority.

The project also improved the port's operational and logistical efficiency, enhanced navigability and safety conditions, enabling larger-tonnage vessels to dock and reducing operational constraints and logistics costs. Additionally, it increased operational predictability, strengthening the Port of Rio de Janeiro's competitiveness in foreign trade.

Currently, besides this port, only the Port of Santos in São Paulo state, the Port of Salvador in Bahia state, the Port of Itaguaí in Rio de Janeiro state, the Port of Paranaguá in Paraná state, and the Port of Pecém in Ceará state have the capacity to accommodate vessels up to 366 meters in length.
