en.Wedoany.com Reported - On June 5, Indonesian telecommunications operator Telkom Indonesia announced that its data center operating company, NeutraDC, is accelerating the expansion of the NeutraDC Nxera Batam project in Batam. The first data center building, BTM-1, is scheduled to commence operations this year, with its entire capacity already secured by partners. Telkom has begun preparations for the construction of the second data center building, BTM-2, to address the growing demand for data centers in the Singapore, Johor, and Riau Islands region.

NeutraDC Nxera Batam is a key node in Telkom's strategy to target the regional digital infrastructure market, located at a critical juncture connecting Indonesia's domestic market with the Southeast Asian digital ecosystem. Batam's proximity to Singapore provides a geographical advantage for accommodating spillover demand in cross-border cloud services, AI infrastructure, data backup, and enterprise digital services. The fact that BTM-1 has secured capacity before officially commencing operations indicates that regional customers are releasing demand for available data center resources, AI computing infrastructure, and cloud service capacity ahead of schedule. Telkom disclosed that Gorilla Technology, headquartered in London, UK, has become one of the strategic partners securing BTM-1 capacity. The company will leverage NeutraDC Nxera Batam's data center capabilities to support its AI infrastructure and digital service deployment in the Asian region.

The project has a planned total capacity of 100MW, with subsequent expansion centered around BTM-2 to increase data center capacity and meet demand in the SIJORI region.

The Southeast Asian data center market is rapidly heating up, driven by key factors including the expansion of AI applications, localization of cloud services, enterprise data governance, cross-border content distribution, and regional digital economic growth. Singapore, as a traditional data center hub, faces ongoing constraints in land, power, and energy consumption, leading surrounding areas to absorb more new capacity. Batam offers certain advantages in terms of geographical distance, international connectivity, and investment environment. If it can combine stable power supply, submarine cable connections, green operations, and cross-border network services, it has the potential to evolve from a single data center site into a regional-level digital infrastructure node. By advancing BTM-2, Telkom is essentially pushing Indonesia from being a mere digital consumption market further into a link in the Southeast Asian data center and AI infrastructure supply chain.

NeutraDC emphasized that the data center construction in Batam will also drive local employment, digital talent cultivation, and the concentration of technology investments. As demand for AI, cloud computing, and digital services continues to rise, data centers are no longer just server hosting facilities but infrastructure platforms connecting networks, computing power, energy, enterprise applications, and regional industrial collaboration. If Telkom can establish stable operational capabilities through NeutraDC in Batam, it will enhance Indonesia's presence in the Southeast Asian digital infrastructure landscape and provide cloud service providers, AI companies, and multinational clients with new alternatives beyond traditional hubs.

Future progress will depend on the timely commissioning of BTM-1, the construction pace of BTM-2, the onboarding of international customers, energy efficiency management, and regional network connectivity capabilities. If the 100MW plan is gradually realized, NeutraDC Nxera Batam is expected to become a significant data center cluster in Indonesia targeting the Southeast Asian AI and cloud service market.
