en.Wedoany.com Reported - Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced two partnerships focused on on-field officiating and fan engagement, collaborating with Liga MX and the German Bundesliga. Agentic artificial intelligence and cloud-based data processing are transforming how football matches are officiated and how fans experience the game.
Liga MX has become the first league outside Europe to officially deploy the Semi-Automated Offside System (Sistema Semiautomatizado para el Fuera de Lugar, SAOT). Developed by Genius Sports on AWS cloud infrastructure, the system is now operational across 18 Mexican clubs, eliminating reliance on manual line-drawing and significantly reducing referee review times. AWS and the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) plan to further expand the technology deployment to drive innovation in the sport.
The SAOT system deploys 30 cameras per stadium, capturing approximately 10,000 data points per player every second. All data is processed in real time by GeniusIQ, an AI platform built by Genius Sports on AWS. When a potential offside situation occurs, the system automatically identifies the moment the ball is played and the players' positions, generating an offside line and 3D visualization within seconds to assist referees in making final decisions. Referees retain decision-making authority but gain faster digital evidence. The partnership also provides league clubs access to Performance Studio and ProView3D tools, enabling coaching staff to analyze match phases from a player's perspective, optimizing tactical preparation and training.
Alongside the technological upgrade in Mexico, the Bundesliga has launched Captain, an agentic AI companion for fans. Integrated into the league's official app and built on AWS data and AI services, Captain serves as a unified conversational interface, offering real-time data, historical trivia, and personalized video tactical analysis based on user preferences. With over 90 Bundesliga players participating in national team tournaments this summer, Captain allows fans to track these players' performances in their respective teams in real time. Coach Mode, a gamified learning feature, leverages AWS AI to guide new fans from basics to advanced tactical analysis. This tool relies on the Bundesliga's new 3D tracking system, which captures 21 body points per player 50 times per second, processing 200 million data points per match.
Through these initiatives, AWS, the Mexican Football Federation, Liga MX, and the Bundesliga demonstrate that agentic AI is becoming a key driver in optimizing referee decisions, enhancing athlete performance, and creating new experiences for fans.
