en.Wedoany.com Reported - Samsung expects that advanced 5G uplink configuration technology, similar to its recent joint demonstration with MediaTek, will enter commercial networks around the end of 2027. This technology is based on a 3Tx 5-layer uplink configuration, designed to enhance uplink throughput and positively impact fixed wireless access (FWA), cloud services, and AI applications.

Samsung and MediaTek previously jointly announced the completion of the industry's first 3Tx 5-layer uplink configuration test. The demonstration combined MediaTek's M90 5G modem platform with Samsung's virtualized RAN (vRAN), Massive-MIMO radio unit, and macro radio unit, achieving an uplink throughput of 670 Mbps in a multi-band configuration.
Dongwoo Lee, Head of the Technology Solutions Group at Samsung Electronics' Network Business, stated that deployment timelines vary by operator, but generally, such technology is expected to be commercialized around the end of 2027, requiring network software upgrades at that time. Lee emphasized that this technology demonstrates the potential to double the maximum uplink throughput of FWA devices in the FR1 band, thereby improving cloud services and AI services, even for users without FR2 coverage. The technology can enhance the quality and reliability of FWA services and support applications that rely on real-time data transmission. Lee added that for FWA, improved uplink speeds will provide more stable and faster internet connections, which are crucial for applications such as video conferencing and online gaming; for cloud services, smoother and more efficient data transmission will support cloud gaming, remote work, and virtual collaboration tools; increased bandwidth and reduced latency will also facilitate data processing and transmission for AI applications, including real-time analytics, machine learning model training, and edge computing tasks.
Lee noted that this technology helps operators expand broadband coverage without relying on additional fixed infrastructure such as fiber, enabling operators to serve more homes and businesses with higher broadband speeds. On the technical side, this achievement leverages Samsung's vRAN platform, Massive-MIMO and macro radio units, as well as MediaTek's M90 5G modem platform. The fully software-based vRAN ensures flexibility and scalability, while the radio units improve spectral efficiency by simultaneously processing multiple data streams through advanced MIMO technology. By combining 3Tx antenna features with 2-layer MIMO capabilities, the demonstration showcases the possibility for operators to transmit more data to users without requiring new spectrum or building new base stations.
