en.Wedoany.com Reported - Renewable energy developer Greenwood Sustainable Infrastructure (GSI) and the Ocean Man Nakoda Nation (OMNN) have commenced construction on a 100MWac solar project in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Named Turning Sun, the utility-scale solar facility is located in the Rural Municipality of Estevan and will operate under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with provincial utility SaskPower.

Engineering, procurement, and construction contractor Barton Malow Canada will lead project delivery. The facility will use approximately 200,000 bifacial solar modules supplied by VSUN Solar, with Polar Racking providing helical pile foundation systems. The project is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026.

GSI CEO Mazen Turk stated that the project is built on strong partnerships and shared goals, and the collaboration with OMNN is delivering a landmark clean energy project to strengthen Saskatchewan's power supply and support economic opportunities.

Project financing was completed earlier this year, with an amount exceeding CAD 200 million (USD 143 million), including construction debt and investment tax credit bridge financing. The financing was led by RBC and Desjardins Group, combining private and public capital to support the project's development, construction, and long-term operation.

Developed in partnership with OMNN, located in southeastern Saskatchewan, the project is part of a broader trend of Indigenous participation in renewable energy infrastructure projects across Canada.

SaskPower CEO Rupen Pandya stated that the company has 700MW of wind and solar under development, all with strong Indigenous ownership components. Turning Sun will provide opportunities for Indigenous businesses and promote economic reconciliation while delivering affordable power to the grid.

At the project's groundbreaking ceremony, the Canadian federal government announced additional support through Natural Resources Canada's Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways (SREPs) program. Terry Duguid, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South, announced a CAD 15 million contribution on behalf of Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson. The SREPs program is a CAD 4.5 billion federal initiative aimed at supporting clean energy deployment and grid modernization projects across Canada.

GSI, a subsidiary of Libra Group, develops, constructs, and operates distributed generation, utility-scale solar, and battery energy storage projects in North America. The company stated that it has developed approximately 581MWdc of installed capacity across 82 renewable energy projects and currently has a 2.1GW development pipeline.
