en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and the Buganda Heritage and Tourism Board (BHTB) have launched a collaborative initiative aimed at driving the digital transformation of the Buganda Kingdom.

UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo held talks in Kampala with a BHTB delegation led by Chief Executive Officer Najibu Nsubuga. Thembo stated that both parties hope to explore collaboration with the Buganda Government—the administrative body of the kingdom—through digital inclusion initiatives, aiming to expand access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT), cultivate digital skills, and ensure that no one is left behind in the digital age.
One of the proposals under discussion is the establishment of an ICT lab at the Buganda Kingdom Library. The partners will also work to improve digital inclusion, foster ICT skills, expand access to digital services, and support the digitization of Buganda's cultural heritage, creating new opportunities for education, preservation, and tourism. Thembo noted that the project will help modernize the library's role, as libraries are evolving into innovation hubs, and integrating digital infrastructure into cultural and heritage spaces is an effective way to enhance digital literacy.
The BHTB welcomed the initiative, praising the regulator's role in promoting local content, which it believes will support heritage preservation and create opportunities for digitizing cultural assets to boost tourism.
The Buganda Kingdom, with a history spanning over 700 years, is centered in Uganda's Central Region, which includes Kampala. The kingdom remains a highly influential traditional monarchy, with its population accounting for more than 20% of Uganda's total population, maintaining significant cultural, economic, and political influence. The kingdom manages substantial economic assets, including land, equity stakes in major enterprises, and community health and education services.
