en.Wedoany.com Reported - Liebherr engineers have pioneered a new path for hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine propulsion in large wheel loaders with the L 566 H prototype. Showcased at Bauma 2025 and other industry events, this model demonstrates that combining proven machine performance with alternative energy sources can achieve high power, efficiency, and productivity.

Compared to conventional models, the hydrogen-powered wheel loader offers the following five key features.

Liebherr tests show that hydrogen is particularly suitable for large machines weighing up to 40 tons. The hydrogen engine developed by Liebherr efficiently delivers substantial energy and impresses with its high performance and robustness. The L 566 H's performance is comparable to that of diesel-powered models.

After covering an entire work shift, the L 566 H can be back in operation within 10 to 15 minutes. Refueling is carried out via stationary H₂ filling stations or mobile refueling solutions, ensuring high flexibility, especially on construction sites without extensive infrastructure.

The hydrogen-powered wheel loader is based on the proven XPower machine concept. The L 566 H is equipped with a power-split XPower drive system. The hydrogen engine, developed at Liebherr's own engine plant in the components division in Bulle, Switzerland, is fully integrated into the machine concept, just like the diesel engine.

Thanks to robust components and high storage capacity, the hydrogen drive is suitable for demanding applications such as gravel pits or quarries. Construction company STRABAG is currently conducting a multi-year trial of the L 566 H at the Kanzelstein quarry in Gratkorn to test its performance.

When using green hydrogen (e.g., from wind, hydro, or solar power), the engine achieves CO₂-free operation with virtually no nitrogen oxides. The L 566 H combines high performance with significantly lower emissions.

As part of its technology-neutral approach, Liebherr demonstrates through the L 566 H in real-world applications that hydrogen propulsion can be a powerful, reliable, and efficient drive option for large construction machinery.
