en.Wedoany.com Reported - Australian Power Conversion Australia (EPCA), Sigma Powertrain, and Dayton-Phoenix Group are advancing a major initiative to fully convert a Caterpillar 793C mechanical-drive mining truck into a pure battery-electric mining haul truck. The vehicle, a retired unit, was donated by KCGM, an operation of Northern Star Resources based in Western Australia.

Northern Star first publicly disclosed the project this week, stating that donating the truck will support the advancement of battery-electric mining technology in Australia.

EPCA has long specialized in electrification retrofits of heavy-duty diesel mining equipment, having previously completed the electrification of a Cat 777 mining truck. More recently, the company announced a collaboration to electrify a Caterpillar 988 wheel loader, which will be deployed for long-term operations by EMJC at a large mine in Western Australia upon completion.

EPCA stated, "The engineering plan for the Cat 793 electrification project has been completed. With continued advancements in battery, drivetrain, and power electronics technology, electrifying this class of mining truck using proven commercial components is now commercially viable. We are confident in achieving the desired range performance and charging capabilities."

The two key technology partners in this project have clearly defined roles: Sigma Powertrain supplies the TERRAMAX gearbox, while Dayton-Phoenix provides the drive motors and inverters.

EPCA noted that multiple industry stakeholders in Western Australia have shown strong support for the project. "The Cat 793 remains one of the most widely used mining truck models in Western Australian mines, offering significant market potential going forward." EPCA's current target is to complete the full vehicle electrification conversion by the end of 2027, followed by demonstration operations at multiple mine sites.
