en.Wedoany.com Reported - Conrad Energy has commenced construction of a 15 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project near Watchet in North Somerset, UK.
Once operational, the on-site batteries will drive the energy transition by providing local and national-level storage and frequency support. This project also marks the start of Conrad Energy's collaboration with independent distribution network operator (IDNO) Aurora, which will be responsible for connecting the storage project to the grid. Additionally, Conrad Energy will work with partners including Tesla Batteries, Sinewave, Hayward Utility Services Ltd, and EPS Construction to advance the project.
The BESS system being installed will help address the mismatch between intermittent renewable energy supply and fluctuating grid demand, while providing key ancillary services such as Dynamic Containment, Dynamic Regulation, and Dynamic Moderation.
Construction is scheduled for completion in summer 2027. At that time, the site will contribute to grid stability and support Somerset's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
Mike Denman, Senior Project Manager at Conrad Energy, expressed excitement about breaking ground on this significant site. BESS and other storage technologies will play a critical role in advancing the energy transition, ensuring energy availability when renewables are not generating, while avoiding waste during periods of low demand. With construction now underway, the team looks forward to further positive progress and commissioning before the end of 2027.
