en.Wedoany.com Reported - Ukraine's largest private energy company, DTEK, and GE Vernova, the energy business of US-based General Electric, have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a new 650 MW combined-cycle gas turbine power plant in western Ukraine.

The memorandum focuses on DTEK's Burshtyn power plant site in western Ukraine, with a project capacity of 650 MW utilizing combined-cycle gas turbine technology. The plant is part of DTEK's strategy to transition from coal to gas, aiming to support the national energy system with more flexible, low-carbon electricity.

The memorandum was signed during the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk, Poland, witnessed by First Deputy Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. The conference, involving governments, financial institutions, and private sector investors, focuses on Ukraine's reconstruction. DTEK and GE Vernova will collaborate to explore the potential deployment of advanced gas turbine technology, equipment supply, and project financing structure development, including auxiliary equipment required for grid connection. Both parties stated that the cooperation is based on a shared vision of supporting Ukraine's energy security, system resilience, and long-term decarbonization.

First Deputy Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that a new 650 MW combined-cycle gas power plant will strengthen Ukraine's power generation facilities. He noted that the memorandum was signed between Ukrainian company DTEK and US company GE Vernova during URC2026 in Gdańsk, with US government representatives present. Shmyhal emphasized that, against the backdrop of attacks on Ukraine's energy sector, such investments are crucial for restoring and developing power generation capacity, and the plant will enhance the flexibility and resilience of the energy system under wartime conditions.

DTEK CEO Maksym Timchenko stated that the partnership with GE Vernova demonstrates that global industry leaders remain prepared to invest in Ukraine's energy future even as the war continues. He noted that the Burshtyn project is not only about rebuilding destroyed facilities but also about building a modern, flexible energy system aligned with Europe's transformation.

Roger Martella, Chief Corporate Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer at GE Vernova, stated that the company has supported Ukraine's efforts to power its people from the outset and is committed to the reconstruction and long-term resilience of energy infrastructure. He noted that large-scale, flexible gas power generation and critical grid equipment will form the cornerstone of Ukraine's energy security, and the memorandum aims to provide efficient, flexible electrification technology and expertise for building a robust, sustainable energy future for Ukraine.

The CCGT plant is one of two DTEK projects listed as flagship initiatives by the Ukrainian government at the Ukraine Recovery Conference. These 18 projects form the basis of the "Economy of the Future" plan, presented at the conference by Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yehor Perehrygin, aimed at driving Ukraine's economic recovery and attracting billions of euros in investment. The project is designed to provide a flexible power generation source that can start within minutes, filling the baseload capacity gap and supporting intermittent renewable energy generation. The total project investment is 900 million euros, with a capacity of 650 MW and an expected annual generation of 5 TWh, targeting commercial operation by 2032.
