en.Wedoany.com Reported - BW ESS (BW ESS), a global energy storage asset owner and operator, has commenced construction of a 1,000 megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of up to 5,700 megawatt-hours in Klostermansfeld, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. This project is one of the largest battery energy storage projects in Europe to date.

Located in the Mansfeld-Südharz district, adjacent to the Klostermansfeld substation, this facility is the largest energy storage installation of its kind in Germany. Its capacity can meet the electricity needs of approximately 3 million German households for at least four hours. BW ESS first invested in the project in 2024 and acquired full ownership earlier this year. The initial developer and seller, Zelos Energy Developments (Zelos Energy Developments), will provide targeted support for local on-site matters until the project enters a deeper construction phase by the end of 2026.
As an experienced long-term owner and operator, BW ESS maintains direct oversight throughout the operational life of its assets, adopting a hands-on approach to unlock value across the entire lifecycle of energy storage assets. This project will be a significant contributor to Germany's energy security and grid stability. The Klostermansfeld substation is one of the few central nodes in Germany's energy grid and has recently been expanded to draw more power from the distribution network and transmit it via high-voltage transmission lines. Consequently, the Klostermansfeld BESS will structurally strengthen the region and enhance the grid's ability to effectively manage peak load periods.
Roberto Jiménez, Managing Director of BW ESS, stated that BW ESS is proud that its energy storage work directly contributes to a resilient and modern energy system. The company has made a long-term commitment to help realize Germany's energy storage potential, and the Klostermansfeld BESS will be the company's first asset in Germany to enter the construction phase. The company will continue to actively promote knowledge transfer within its portfolio, leveraging extensive experience from mature global markets.
