en.Wedoany.com Reported - Renova Inc. of Japan announced that its 48 MW Karumai West solar power plant in Iwate Prefecture has resumed commercial operations. The plant was shut down on April 22, 2026, due to defects in its power receiving and transforming equipment, and has been reconnected to the grid after repairs.
The outage was caused by technical defects in the grid interconnection interface equipment. Repair work focused on restoring equipment reliability, ensuring it meets requirements for voltage and frequency control, protection systems, and safe operation under normal grid conditions. After completing commissioning and testing verification, the plant fully resumed commercial operations. Renova stated that the plant's output is expected to align with typical performance targets for utility-scale solar plants of similar scale in Japan.
Renova expects that losses from the outage will be covered by profit insurance, with related financial impacts limited to fiscal year 2027. The company also noted that any residual financial impact timing will be concentrated in that fiscal year, depending on the confirmation timing of outage-related costs and insurance settlements. The restart also reduces the company's generation loss period and limits disruptions to renewable energy supply obligations and reporting.
The plant can generate approximately 50 million kWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power about 15,000 local households. Its resumed operations help provide stable clean electricity supply to the region, supporting regional sustainable development goals.
This incident highlights the importance of preventive maintenance and monitoring of critical grid interconnection electrical equipment for utility-scale solar assets.
