Wedoany.com Report-Apr. 16, Skretting, a Norway-based sustainable animal feed manufacturer, has signed a 15-year agreement with Strand Shipping, also from Norway, and Vertom Group, a Dutch shortsea shipping company. The partnership involves leasing four diesel-electric vessels to enhance the efficiency of raw material imports while reducing environmental impact.

The collaboration, developed over the past year, focuses on constructing four energy-efficient vessels equipped with a multi-fuel propulsion system. These vessels are expected to cut fuel consumption and emissions by approximately 30% compared to traditional ships. Vertom, the future owner of the vessels, will oversee their construction, with most scheduled for delivery in 2026. Strand Shipping will manage their daily operations once operational.

Vertom representatives emphasized that the vessels will feature advanced technologies to boost energy efficiency and lower emissions. These include biofuel capabilities for cleaner operations, shore power connections to minimize emissions at ports, and wind-assisted propulsion systems where applicable.

Based in Rhoon, Netherlands, Vertom Group operates a fleet of about 100 vessels and is committed to sustainability in maritime operations. In February 2024, Vertom ordered twelve diesel-electric vessels from Chowgule shipyard in India. These 6,000 dwt ships are smaller versions of the 7,280 dwt vessels built in the Netherlands. The first, MV Vertom Rita, was delivered in December 2024, and the second, MV Vertom Rian, launched in March 2025, with its formal handover set for May 2025.

Vertom is also constructing four 10,700 dwt multipurpose vessels at Chowgule, equipped with diesel-electric propulsion. These are expected to be delivered in 2027 and 2028, further supporting sustainable maritime transport.
