The ceremony was officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, with attendance from Sarawak Public Works Department Director Cassidy Morris, Datuk Francis Harden, and State Assemblywoman Dayang Norazah. The bridge, costing over RM223 million, spans 870 meters in length and stands 145.5 meters high, making it the tallest suspension bridge in Malaysia. It was constructed by Naim Gamuda Sdn Bhd.
The Second Batang Lupar Bridge project is located in Simanggang, Sarawak, crossing the Batang Lupar River. Construction began in June 2020. The project was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic during construction and is now in its final stages. According to Project Manager Yu Xing, the bridge is expected to be officially completed and opened to traffic by the end of October or early November 2026. Once opened, the distance from the bridge to Betong town center will be only 30 kilometers, with a travel time of about half an hour, significantly reducing travel time between Betong and Sri Aman, providing convenience for residents on both sides of the river, and driving regional economic development.
Naim Gamuda Sdn Bhd is a joint venture between Malaysia's Naim Group and Gamuda Group. Naim Group is one of the largest construction and property development companies in Sarawak, while Gamuda Group is a leading engineering and construction company in Malaysia, having participated in numerous large-scale infrastructure projects. The Sarawak Public Works Department is the engineering authority under the Sarawak state government, responsible for the planning, construction, and maintenance of public infrastructure across the state.
The opening of the Second Batang Lupar Bridge will effectively improve transportation connectivity in south-central Sarawak, facilitating efficient regional logistics and people flow. As the tallest suspension bridge in Malaysia, it will also become a landmark structure in Sarawak, positively impacting local tourism and economic and social development. After opening, the bridge will connect the two important towns of Betong and Sri Aman, providing more convenient travel options for residents along the route, while also expected to stimulate commercial activities and investment growth on both sides of the river.
