en.Wedoany.com Reported - EEW Energy from Waste Stavenhagen GmbH & Co. KG, together with the town of Stavenhagen and Wärmeversorgung Stavenhagen GmbH, has commissioned a district heating extraction system that feeds waste heat from the thermal treatment of sewage sludge into the municipal grid. Since sewage sludge is almost entirely biogenic, the project will provide climate-friendly heat for residents and public institutions.
Dr Till Backhaus, Environment Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, attended the inauguration and, along with other project partners, hailed the initiative as a model of the circular economy: sewage sludge is used both as an energy source and as a raw material for future phosphorus recovery, while directly benefiting local residents.
Local leaders emphasized the project's significant role in enhancing Stavenhagen's independent heating capacity, creating long-term prospects for residents, and supporting municipal climate goals. EEW and the municipal heat supplier stated that close cooperation ensured project delivery, with plans to further expand the district heating network.
Recent technical milestones include the installation of two heat condensers, connection of the pump station to the power supply, and full integration of pipeline connections and automation systems. With technical commissioning completed, the plant has transitioned from the construction phase to regular operation. The Stavenhagen project is EEW's second district heating project after Premnitz, with the Großräschen project set to commence implementation soon.
