Wedoany.com Report-May 5, India added 7,782 MW of solar power capacity in the first quarter of 2025, a decrease of 8.4% compared to the same period in 2024, yet marking the second-highest quarterly addition in the past 13 quarters, according to a report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA). Wind power capacity grew by 1,875 MW, the highest quarterly increase for the sector in over three years.

The IEEFA report highlights: “Increased solar and wind capacity additions are driven by higher offered capacities through various tenders—solar, wind, solar + wind hybrids, and energy storage—since 2018. While total tendered capacity increased to 40 GW in 2018 and 2019 (and dipped during Covid-19 years), it crossed 50 GW in 2023 and 2024.” The report notes that tendered capacity has risen since 2023, aligning with India’s goal to add approximately 50 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity annually through 2030, targeting a total of 500 GW. Challenges such as delays in signing power supply agreements, obtaining permits, and securing grid connectivity continue to impact installation progress.

Regionally, Rajasthan and Gujarat led renewable energy growth, with 1,973 MW and 1,910 MW installed, respectively, in Q1 2025. Maharashtra contributed 1,780 MW, Karnataka added 1,316 MW, and Andhra Pradesh installed 940 MW, supported by its Integrated Clean Energy Policy launched in October 2024, which aims for 160 GW of clean energy and storage within five years. By March 31, 2025, India’s total installed solar capacity reached 106 GW, while wind capacity exceeded 50 GW.
