Welsh automotive sector contributes £477 million to UK economy
en.Wedoany.com Reported - The latest analysis from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that the Welsh automotive sector contributes £477 million to the UK economy and directly supports 7,000 jobs.

The data was released as industry leaders, government representatives, and defence sector executives gathered in Newport for the SMMT Wales Regional Forum to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. The analysis indicates that Welsh automotive businesses account for approximately one-twentieth of UK automotive jobs, contribute £477 million to the economy, and support technical roles in vehicle manufacturing, powertrain production, semiconductors, and advanced engineering.
Held on 9 July, the forum focused on how the industry and government can collaborate to enhance competitiveness and attract investment amid the transition to electrification, regulatory changes, high energy costs, and global trade uncertainties. Delegates also discussed opportunities for automotive suppliers arising from the recently announced UK defence investment plans.
Wales, with its diverse portfolio of automotive and engineering businesses, is a vital part of the UK's manufacturing landscape. Among them, Aston Martin's St Athan plant produces the DBX luxury SUV, while Toyota's Deeside engine plant employs around 600 people and has attracted over £2.8 billion in investment.
Vishay Newport, the UK's largest semiconductor manufacturing facility, is expected to support over 500 technical roles, backed by £250 million in public investment. Other Wales-based supply chain companies, including BJ Seals, Lucas Oil Products, and Senior Flexonics, play a key role in supporting automotive production and future vehicle technologies.
SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes stated at the event that Wales is an integral part of the UK automotive industry, and holding the forum recognises the sector's strength, capability, and potential across the country. He also noted that as the industry transforms, events bringing together businesses and government are crucial for addressing shared challenges, unlocking future investment, and ensuring Wales and the UK remain globally competitive.
The forum brought together senior representatives from Aston Martin, Tata Steel, Vishay, General Dynamics, and the Welsh Government.
SMMT represents over 800 companies across vehicle manufacturing, supply chain, technology, and aftermarket sectors, supporting the industry through advocacy, market intelligence, trade initiatives, and supplier development programmes. Its latest initiative is the Supply Chain Resilience Programme, launched in 2026, which aims to help UK suppliers navigate an increasingly complex market environment through targeted support, industry intelligence, and business engagement opportunities. The programme complements SMMT's broader efforts to promote the UK as a premier destination for automotive investment, innovation, and international collaboration.
