The agency plans to develop physics-informed optimization tools to help manufacturers improve production yield and product quality using existing facilities rather than new equipment. The proposed work will integrate the expertise of materials scientists, process engineers, and data scientists to identify sources of process variation and establish quantitative models to enhance manufacturing consistency.

DARPA notes that manufacturers typically rely on experienced operators to manage the complex interactions among production variables such as material composition, heat treatment, rolling and forging temperatures, and environmental conditions. The agency believes that recent advances in materials informatics and physical modeling can help transform operational knowledge into scalable optimization tools that remain effective even with personnel turnover.

Reducing process variation can help manufacturers increase yield, reduce scrap and rework, and produce higher-performance materials without the need for large-scale facility upgrades.
