en.Wedoany.com Reported - Over 88% of public lighting concession contracts plan to implement remote management or remote measurement systems, according to Pedro Iacovino, President of the Brazilian Association of Public Lighting and Smart Cities (ABCIP). Currently, Brazil has at least 158 such service concession projects, involving over R$39 billion and serving approximately 60 million people, with projects mainly concentrated in the southern and southeastern regions.
Pedro Iacovino explained that 36 of these concession projects will include connectivity, video surveillance, or distributed generation, initiatives that help drive the transformation of cities into smart cities. In an interview with Mobile Time, the president emphasized that modernizing public lighting typically achieves cost savings of 50% to 70%, allowing cities to invest the surplus in other projects.
The extensive coverage of public lighting networks also supports the installation of traffic lights, radars, security cameras, and sensors without the need for additional infrastructure. Therefore, service modernization often serves as the starting point for a city's smartification process. However, the ABCIP president stressed that the success of this evolution depends on good urban planning, which must follow the guidelines of the City Statute, while also emphasizing professional training and integration with the environment.
The association expects 25 new concession contracts to be added this year. Additionally, the association is monitoring over 800 cities interested in establishing public-private partnerships (PPPs) for public lighting or smart city infrastructure. The association predicts that, driven by legal and regulatory frameworks, the sector will experience significant growth over the next four years.
