en.Wedoany.com Reported - Global chemical giant LyondellBasell (LYB), in collaboration with Mondelēz International, Amcor, Taghleef Industries, and other companies, has developed a flexible packaging solution for Marabou chocolate bars. The packaging uses LYB CirculenRevive polymer, achieving 100% certified recycled content through the ISCC PLUS certified mass balance method, ultimately enabling Mondelēz to offer food-grade flexible packaging containing 75% recycled content.

Flexible packaging is difficult to recycle, and traditional methods struggle to convert it into food-grade recycled raw materials. Chemical recycling technology can solve this challenge. LYB plans to supply polymers for Marabou packaging through its first commercial catalytic chemical recycling plant, MoReTec-1, under construction in Wesseling, Germany, which has a designed annual capacity of 50,000 tons of circular feedstock. LYB's joint venture, Source One Plastics, in Eicklingen, Germany, processes mixed plastic waste to supply MoReTec-1; currently, the recycled feedstock required for LYB's CirculenRevive recycled polymers comes from third-party pyrolysis oil producers. In this collaboration, Taghleef Industries is responsible for developing the base film, which Amcor processes into the final flexible packaging.
Yvonne van der Laan, Executive Vice President of LYB's Sustainable Solutions & Technology Business, stated: "We are committed to making circular and low-carbon solutions practically serve businesses while providing solutions for sustainable daily living." This packaging solution also aligns with the expected recycled content requirements of the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). LYB CEO Peter Vanacker noted that this collaboration demonstrates the ability to combine chemical recycling innovation with scaled production. Once the MoReTec-1 project is operational, it will enhance the circular feedstock supply system within the company's integrated ecosystem, improving the capacity to convert hard-to-recycle plastic waste into circular feedstock.
Richard Ackermans, Packaging Sustainability Manager at Mondelēz International, stated plans to continuously increase the proportion of recycled plastic used in packaging. Collaborating with industry chain partners like LYB can transform circular development visions into commercial products. This collaboration reflects consumer brands' demand for high-performance circular polymers: companies need to meet recycled content targets while requiring materials to meet the quality standards of flexible food packaging. This packaging helps Europe achieve its recycling development goals and pre-adapts to the EU's upcoming mandatory recycled content targets.

CirculenRevive recycled polymers are produced using chemical recycling processes, converting hard-to-recycle mixed consumer plastic waste, including flexible packaging, into raw materials for polymer production. LYB feeds these recycled raw materials into existing production lines, replacing fossil-based feedstocks, and accounts for the proportion of recycled content in end products through the ISCC PLUS certified mass balance system. The resulting recycled polymers have performance identical to virgin plastics and can directly replace traditional raw materials, helping brands increase recycled content while ensuring product performance and regulatory compliance.
