Sakhalin State University in Russia Develops Dismantlable Modular Fuel Cell
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Scientists at Sakhalin State University (SakhSU) are developing a dismantlable modular fuel cell prototype, which is expected to replace imported products in the hydrogen energy sector and simplify equipment maintenance processes.

The project utilizes innovative bipolar plates based on titanium materials. Unlike traditional foreign welded counterparts, which fail upon minor malfunctions and cannot be locally repaired, the Russian design allows for complete disassembly, enabling replacement of membrane electrode assemblies without damaging the most expensive components. According to the developers, the device's sealing can maintain up to 2 atmospheres of pressure, with a designed service life of over 10,000 hours of continuous operation for the seals.
University scientists are using computational fluid dynamics methods (CFD simulation) to optimize the shape of gas and cooling channels, with the ultimate goal of improving heat flow uniformity to no less than 90%, thereby reducing the risk of local overheating and enhancing equipment reliability. Special attention has been paid to the issue of metal hydrogen embrittlement during development. To protect titanium plates up to 3 mm thick, specialized coatings are being developed to prevent hydrogen from penetrating the material structure and causing damage in corrosive environments.
Currently, the product's technology readiness level corresponds to TRL 4-5, transitioning from laboratory prototypes to testing under near-industrial conditions. The new fuel cells will be applied in transportation (including mining machinery, railways, and marine vessels), stationary energy facilities in remote and Arctic regions, as well as backup power sources for industrial facilities.
