en.Wedoany.com Reported - The 25th Navajo Nation Council has approved a $244.6 million investment to implement a comprehensive broadband infrastructure project covering all 110 chapters of the Navajo Nation. The project will simultaneously advance short-term network access and long-term communication facility construction, while providing matching funds for the U.S. federal Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program. It is expected to ultimately help approximately 31,000 Navajo households gain access to high-speed internet.Navajo Nation Approves $244.6 Million Broadband Investment

The project will adopt a coordinated deployment approach combining fiber optics, low-Earth orbit satellites, and cellular networks, with access plans determined based on existing communication conditions in different areas. Currently, 52 of the 110 chapters have access to existing fiber infrastructure, while the remaining 58 underserved chapters will first receive supplemental coverage through low-Earth orbit satellite internet. According to the plan, these chapters will gain access to Starlink satellite internet services within 90 days, buying time for subsequent fixed broadband construction.

The low-Earth orbit satellite service is tasked with rapidly bridging connectivity gaps. Due to the vast territory of the Navajo Nation, some settlements are far from existing fiber backbones and communication towers. If construction of the ground network were to be completed first, remote households would still lack stable internet for an extended period. Once satellite terminals are deployed, they can initially meet residents' needs for online learning, telemedicine, digital government services, and daily communication, but will not replace subsequent fiber construction.

Long-term construction will still focus on expanding the fiber network. The project will continue extending fiber lines within the Navajo Nation territory, connecting more chapters, settlements, and public facilities to the fixed broadband network. Fiber will handle high-capacity data transmission and network backhaul, and will also provide foundational connectivity for upgrading local communication towers and building new mobile communication facilities.

Cellular network construction will proceed in tandem with fiber deployment. Related plans include upgrading communication towers already connected to fiber, extending fiber to more base station locations, and building new towers in areas currently without mobile communication services. By increasing the number of base stations and improving backhaul networks, the project will gradually expand 5G coverage, enhancing the continuity and data transmission capabilities of mobile networks in remote areas.

This comprehensive broadband plan does not rely on a single technology to cover the entire region. Instead, it first uses low-Earth orbit satellites to address the urgent access needs of 58 chapters, then establishes long-term communication infrastructure through fiber and cellular networks. Subsequent construction progress will primarily be reflected in the installation of Starlink terminals, extension of fiber lines, upgrades to communication towers, and construction of new base stations in uncovered areas.
