en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Regional Government of Arequipa, Peru (Gobierno Regional de Arequipa) presented the comprehensive vision for the Megapuerto de las Américas Corío at the National Investment Projects Conference. This project not only includes the construction of a modern port but is also dedicated to developing Peru's first port city with a long-term plan spanning 100 years.

Regional Governor Rohel Sánchez Sánchez emphasized at the conference that Corío is not a competitor to regional ports or other domestic terminals, but a project oriented toward the entire continent. He pointed out that the port is located on the coast of Arequipa, Peru, with natural water depths ranging from 19 to 29 meters, offering a unique advantage for receiving large vessels and meeting growing international trade demands.

Sánchez stated that the project has achieved decisive progress. Demand studies confirm that attracting only 40% of exports from southern Brazil would ensure the operation of the Corío megaport. Additionally, the master plan is about to be approved, which will open a promotion phase targeting domestic and international investors. The regional government has completed the legal and physical cleanup of 34,596 hectares of land and registered it under the state's name, providing legal guarantees for future investments.

The project goes beyond port construction, integrating a logistics and industrial ecosystem comprising a port core, logistics platform, large industrial zone, research and development and technological innovation spaces, a future special economic zone, and a port city. The entire system is primarily driven by private investment, utilizing Public-Private Partnerships (Asociaciones Público-Privadas) and Asset Projects (Proyectos en Activos), with the goal of positioning Arequipa as a national and regional economic development hub.

As part of long-term planning, the regional government has begun developing a Territorial Conditioning Plan (Plan de Acondicionamiento Territorial) to regulate urban growth and ensure sustainable development. This plan includes multimodal transportinfrastructure, connecting the megaport to the national road network, the Bi-Oceanic Railway Integration, airports, logistics centers, residential areas, green spaces, and technological innovation zones. Universities and professional institutions are participating in the urban and environmental design of the project, adhering to the concept of a modern, resilient city.

Sánchez concluded that development requires a long-term vision, solid institutions, governance capacity, and strategic alliances among the state, private sector, academia, and civil society. The Corío project represents a historic opportunity to position Peru as a major logistics and commercial hub on the Pacific coast.
